G.O.DCast #4 DJ JAMS

I went on tour with Jams in the spring of 2012 and I really got to know who she was as a DJ and as a person. What I concluded was that she is a perfect example of woman taking charge of themselves in the music industry. Jams is grounded and talented, she knows what she wants and she works hard to make things happen both for herself and her community and I think the latter half of that statement is what makes her extra special. It was no surprise to me once I interviewed her for G.O.D, that she is heavily involved of all facets of the Drum and Bass community Canada wide and is constantly pushing every organization she deals with higher and higher. Her ceiling of ability and flexibility is limitless and I really think that's cool. We are so thrilled and honoured to have Jams repping Girls on Decks this month with her exclusive G.O.D Mix, check it out! - Isis Graham

Miss Jams, you recently made the move to the francophone side of the country to make your mark in the bass scene out East. How has the transition been for you?

It's really been such a whirlwind. Relocation is never easy and I hadn't really even imagined in my wildest dreams that I would someday be living in the heart of downtown Montreal, It's surreal at times. Since arriving here I've played some of the craziest shows, met some unbelievably wonderful people, seen the most beautiful things and made some amazing connections and it just keeps going up from here.

What is your favourite french word so far?

Chatouiller pronounced [sha tu yay] - It means "to tickle" I just thought it was the cutest thing ever the first time I heard it.

Do you find a big difference in the bass culture/community in Eastern Canada?

I think Canada is kicking ass and taking names when it when it comes to Bass Culture! EAST and WEST, but both sides on their own terms. It's hard to compare the two against each other because they both really show case a lot of awesome similarities. One of the nicest things is that collectively Canada is home to some of the most talented Dj's and producers in the world and we host some of the largest events and festivals, this statement is valid for both sides of the county. The one main difference I noted is people's musical preference when it comes to the styles of bass music they enjoy. Over here everyone is little more musically open minded but also a little more closed minded at the same time. It's an interesting dynamic that creates a unique palette from that of out West.

You linked up with your partner Jamie Sho (now Strange Future) and created the moniker Master-Faders in 2011, we know that both of you have been in the scene for over 15 years collectively, what is the idea behind your duo and how does it differ from your personal Jams sets?

The duo was created to combine the skills of two powerhouses behind the decks and to really take things to the next level. With the Master-Faders we really push ourselves to keep things heavy, transition from genre to genre flawlessly, and mix as fast as humanly possible. On stage we work together in unison and at times are so in sync we have the mind of one DJ and the hands of two, thus creating endless technical possibilities. My personal Jams sets reflect my personal taste, mood, and feeling and at times can be either a little more melodic or girly. I really enjoy mixing as Jams and I also love working as a duo, I'm glad to have the opportunity to do both!! When mixing together we have to share the story, share the stage and accommodate both artists personality and preferences. This creates a distinguishable sound and complementary tension within every Master-Faders mix and performance.

What is DNB Lives here and how do you contribute to it?

DnB Lives Here is a collective of individuals committed to growing and advancing Drum and Bass music culture with a focus on Canada. It was founded several years ago in Edmonton by John Rolodex with the help of me and a dedicated team. We resurrected a diminishing DnB scene from the ground up with the support of local junglists. In the past few years, the project has gained national attention as Canada has shown the rest of the world that DnB really does Live Here.

You recently took the helm at DNB Girls on Canada with DJ SW@T managing the ever growing roster of talented women. Tell us about what DNB Girls of Canada is up to and the strides you have taken to get the ladies of bass into the spotlight?

There are a few projects in the works that have really helped us showcase the Canadian women of Drum and Bass. Last August we launched the L.O.U.D. Podcast series (Ladies of Ultimate Destruction) featuring Drum and Bass mixes from each of our rostered girls and global female favourites! We also run a collective weekly radio show every Sunday. Believe it or not we broadcast live from a new city each week with a new host. We have broad casted from Vancouver to Halifax to Costa RIca and Mexico! These projects are assisting us in building a global audience as our proud supporters continue to grow. We have been receiving an amazing amount of positive feedback and these projects continue to shine a spotlight on every artist we feature.

Girls on Decks has found that in the last 5 years, the number of female DJS has literally grown by 500%, did you find the same thing when you are trolling the Canadian wild for new DNBGirls talent?

Absolutely, as I am always keeping my eyes and ears open for fresh talent. There has to be at least 4o-50 solid female DnB Dj's I could name in Canada alone! And that's just one genre! Generally speaking I find Canada is home to so many musical geniuses female and male, I have the honour of knowing many of them. I've always thought how cool that was, just how much talent we have in this county when you actually think about it.

In a recent article we read that one of the reasons DNB Girls of Canada came to fruition, was to create a "support group of like minded, hard working women to inspire and teach one another along the way in what can feel at times like a Boy’s Only Club." This philosophy is almost identical to Girls on Decks. It seems to us, that there is a higher consciousness at play with women in the music industry right now and it's really good to see woman taking charge of their creativity, productivity and success. What do you think was the breaking point for women in music or how do you think the cultural landscape has changed in order to accommodate for more women doing big things?

I agree with you it is really great to see woman taking charge of their creativity, productivity and success, it's virtually becoming impossible for anyone to hold us back now. Accompany that with the phenomenal encouragement and support systems such as Girls on Decks and DNB Girls of Canada and it makes us unstoppable. Women in music will continue to work hard for their dreams and together as a team our heart beats as one.

You are mostly involved with DNB related organizations but we know that you can rock a good breaks or house set, what drives you to drum and bass over everything else?

I am a DnB activist but I love all music! Good music is good music. I have extremely versatile tastes and find melody in many unexpected places. You'll be able to hear my broad spectrum of variety in my exclusive GOD podcast. I wanted to put a little bit of something in there for everyone. I've always had a soft spot for broken beats and bass and when it all boils down to it … I'm a junglist at heart. I've loved it from them moment I heard it, my roots have keep me grounded.

Where can JAMS fans find you rocking the decks this summer?

So far it's confirmed I'll be playing Bassdrive w/ Vilify May 29th, Valhalla Sound Circus 2013, Evolve Festival (Nova Scotia), and the Female Arts and Music Exhibition in BC this September, with more dates to come! Also watch for Me and Mc Ella GRAVE ripping up the airwaves on the DnB Girls Ustream Radio May 26th!

You are a busy girl, outside of DNB Girls of Canada, Master-Faders, DNB Lives Here, WHAT ELSE are you up to this year?

Music keeps me very busy but so does life in general. On top of many other musical projects i'm planning to dive head first into production this year!! I'm also an aspiring rap artists after recently revisiting my dream from the 7th grade and my goal is to be able to rap over my first track. Outside of the studio I work full time as an executive logistics manager in a very fast paced and challenging environment. When I'm not working I enjoy spending time with my wicked friends and enjoying the beautiful historic city of Montreal, local festivals and the Quebec countryside. This city keeps me buzzing!! I most certainly look forward to seeing my friends back in Alberta soon as I plan to visit back home in September. I Can't stay away too long

G.O.DCast #3 DJ RABBYT

DJ RABBYT///Q&A///CERTIFIED FUNKY

DOWNLOAD G.O.DCAST EPISODE 3 HERE

So Kristy tell G.O.D a little bit about yourself? Where are you from where have you been where are you going!!

I'm from Calgary, born and raised.  I used to be a punk drummer, my first Idol was Travis Barker from Blink-182.  I learned every beat he ever played.  After a short stint in university with a band called Open To Closure I opened myself up to other bands.  I played and toured with The Smoking Pistols which was an eclectic mix of country, punk and electronic influence.  After I moved away from that group I was open to anything.  In 2010 my friend dragged me across the country to see a Bassnectar show, I had no idea who he was.  It was a tough choice but I gave up the drums for the decks because of that show alone.  Less than a week later I joined a mobile DJ company and learned how to play on real turntables and how to read a crowd. 250 shows and 2 Shambhala's later I am finally finding myself among the crowd I truly love to be with who have accepted me for who I am.  I plan to give back to the community that changed my life by trying to influence others to love themselves for who they are and to work hard to achieve their dreams.

We really dig your dj name and we're wondering what "rabbit hole" you pulled that from and why do you use a Y instead of an I?

I knew I had to have a spirit hood for Shambhala.  Before I ever went there I spent a couple weeks working on making my own hood.  I didn't really care for rabbits but the universe guided me to that creation.  The hood became the biggest social ice-breaker of my life.  Rabbits slowly became my 'thing'.  I even have a wild rabbit that lives outside my apartment that I regularly feed.  As for the Y, it has to do with the gender issue.  Typically many names that are the same are spelled differently based on gender and Y is often used to feminize names.  Considering that Rabbit is a the name of a seasoned DJ in the USA, I had to pick something different that still related to rabbits.  I really got lucky that changing a single letter made the name unique.

We have heard you refer to your musical style as "fractal funk". Now being a Shambhala veteran, I have a pretty good grasp on what that means but for those that dont why dont, can you enlighten us all?
Well my musical roots have always come from the typical rock legends of the past; The Beatles, Hendrix, Pink Floyd and a large variety of disco, protest and funk tunes.  My goal with my style is to incorporate a modern level of electronic production layered with acapellas and remixes of all the tunes I used to listen to on a daily basis.  I believe this gives my sound a well rounded pleasure to any audience since there are many different levels of which you can appreciate the music; there is something for everyone.  My head is always banging to a mid tempo range of music so I stick to that for the majority of my sets.  My favorite Tempo is 111bpm.

What is your dream gig?
Shambhala would be an absolute dream come true, but I think playing Red Rocks Amphitheater would be totally out of this world as well.

What are some of the trials and tribulations you face as a gender bending DJ?

To be honest I haven't had any troubles with my gender bending nature, even outside of DJing.  I am insanely lucky for that, so many people are faced with violence and anger when gender norms are challenged.  If anything my outfits and makeup have influenced my career in a positive way.  People will constantly recognize me on the street and at shows because of the impact it makes on the performance as a whole.  I am still in the very early stages of transition from male to female but I have been able to pass as a female in most of my social encounters, which is my ultimate goal.

Girls On Decks is a huge supporter of the LGBTQ community so what took you so long to get involved with us?

I actually didn't realize how involved the Girls On Decks were in the LGBTQ scene until after I played the International Women's Day event.  It was a long standing goal of mine to become a part of the collective but I didn't want to pull that trigger too early, in case I wasn't viewed as a true female.  Luckily Girls On Decks threw up an open invitation for the IWD show and I decided now was the time to throw my cards on the table.  There was absolutely no question of my gender and the Girls On Decks have become my go-to place for complete and total acceptance of my transgender nature. It truly means the world to me.

AND YOU MEAN THE WORLD TO US KRISTI!

What are your summer plans? Festivals no doubt and if so, which one are you most looking forward too?

This summer I look forward to hopefully securing a spot at Fozzy Fest.  The Mad Hatter Music Festival is already in my books.  Last year I was a headliner at the Mad Hatter and was asked to play the following night at another stage, coincidentally called The Rabbit Hole.  Other than that I hope to begin producing my own funky remixes and expanding the deck that I play on with a clip trigger pad for a more intricate live mix.

I hear you like to play dress-up when you DJ! What's your favorite outfit to strut in!
My outfits are mostly hand made, so all of them have a lot of sentimental value.  My latest outfit is my current favorite.  I wear rabbit faux fur leggings and a pink tutu that was made for me by a good friend.  A pink corset is trimmed with rabbit faux fur that wraps around my chest.  I'm using a new pink glitter for makeup and inch long eyelashes.  For the first time this outfit does not include the hood that started the rabbit name.

Is it true that you have made DJing a full time job? Do you do weddings?
Yes, DJing is currently a full time job for me.  I play about 3-4 shows a week which can range from school dances and corporate events to weddings.  Sometimes you can even find me at The Bay downtown playing for 8 hours straight to promote their monthly gala.  The heavy seasons are Christmas (as corporate events skyrocket in number) and graduation season.  The company I work for plays 9 out of the 11 biggest high schools in town.  Unfortunately I don't get to play my usual funky music but working in this way has honed my crowd reading skills and given me a confidence on stage that would have taken years to acquire if I had been solely pursuing the club scene.

Top 5 tracks at the moment: GO!

1. Woke Up This Morning - Alabama 3
2. Move Your Feet - Junior Senior
3. I Love It - Icono Pop
4. Rock DJ - Robbie Williams
5. Hot Like Dimes - Pretty Lights

Who would you love to play a show alongside?

Hands down, Bobby C Sound TV.  He has been the most inspiring funk DJ I have ever heard.  Much of the way I play stylistically and musically has grown from dissecting his sets.  His song selection has heavily influenced my choice to often play original music that flows into remixes of the same track.

TYN LOUNGE - 100, 815 - 8th Avenue SW, Calgary

Thank You! From Girls on Decks & Erica Dee

On behalf of all of the performers and artists on Sunday night, we would like to thank everyone who came down to make our first Sunday Special at the Habitat memorable and exciting. It really brings a warm and fuzzy feeling to our guts when we see such vibrant support for live artists and Djs alike. For G.O.D it was a first to have Mama Miche & Erica Dee perform and I think we can all agree that the music was off the chain!

When we set out to create the Sunday Special series, we did so with live acts in mind. Bridging the gap between live PA artists and Djs and bringing them all together under one roof to prove that it is possible for clubgoers to enjoy the often jarring stops and starts of a live show. Well, Calgary, you handled it and you were amazing.

We look forward to doing a second installment of the Sunday Special in the fall after the Festival Season is over. If you or someone you know participates in a live music act, put them in touch with us. We are always open to new ideas to help musicians connect to new audiences and bring something fresh to Calgary night life.

Extra special thanks to Erica Dee, Rebecca Dawn, FourEyes, Yolanda Seargant, Comrade, Jayzen, Mama Miche for being creative and ground breaking in everything you do. The Habitat Living Sound for having us and providing a magical and cozy space to do our event, Eric and his video crew, Shaelyne for following us around and documenting the evening, Cosm for hosting Erica on Mental Illness CJSW 90.9, Freq Magazine for publishing a great article about Erica and the entire Girls on Decks roster for showing up and participating all night! Big Love - xxx

G.O.DCAST EPISODE 2: KRYSTLE LOVE B

Q&A \\\\\\\\\\ KRYSTLE LOVE B

DOWNLOAD G.O.DCAST EPISODE 2

Krystle joined Girls on Decks in 2012 after meeting Isis Graham at a fundraiser for the Organ Collective. The two hit it off right away given that they both have a passion for music production, indie rock and electronic music. As many people are aware, there aren't many female music producers in Calgary so when they met, the relationship was "OMG BFF" status fairly quickly. The girls laugh about the countless hours that have been spent mindlessly texting about "nerdy music stuff". The two have shared the stage multiple times performing live sets and now that Krystle is Djing, there are even more opportunities for her in Calgary to show her many musical talents. If one thing is clear about Love B, it is that she is fully engaged and committed to her craft. She attends workshops to improve and grow her knowledge and works hard in the studio on most weekends when her counterparts are raving at clubs. Technically nothing stands in her way of solving recording and engineering problems and we love her for it. Pouring out a new piece of music every week with each one sounding even better than the last, there's not doubt that the world will catch on to her explosive talents very very soon.

You made your start in music playing in different bands in both Calgary and Vancouver? Tell us about your experience playing in bands?

I was only ever in one band but my experience with it had been bittersweet. It was a good run while we lasted, I learnt a lot about the local music scene and made some great contacts and new friends. But I was young and my interests, influences and taste in music were evolving which conflicted with the interest of my band mate. I like that I now have full control over my own sound and what/where I want to take it.
We all know that touring has its ups and downs, especially as a group.

What were your least and most favourite things about touring?

Least favourite things:
brushing my teeth in a McDonald's washroom....worst thing ever. Not showering every day. This is actually a normal thing for most touring musicians, that you don't get to shower a lot. The longest I went was 4 days straight...that is never happening again. Also, sleeping in the trunk of our tour van next to the spare tire and not being able to eat properly!
Favorite things:
The experience! I had so much fun and it's definitely something to remember. Being in a different place, city, province and sharing your music is a great feeling. It's hard to explain but I love all of touring (minus what I said earlier).

What has been the funniest or most embarrassing thing to happen to you on stage?

I remember one show I played (with my band) where the sound coming out of our mac book just stopped right in the middle of a song and there was a huge crowd. It wasn't anything on our end specifically but one of the other bands had just bought new lighting for their show. They offered the lights to us for our set. Turns out Fluorescent lighting and the way our rig was setup did not mix well. Every time the light switched or turned on/off, our sound would drop...then come back...then drop again. That was fun trying figuring out what the hell was going on.

You've worked really hard to create a signature sound with your personal tracks. Listeners find beautiful pop melodies over some edgy bass lines and really well written drums. Do you feel that your sound is transforming?

Definitely. I'm still growing, learning new things and being exposed to different kinds of music. Especially this past year, being more involved with Girls On Decks, I've listened and have been introduced to genre's of music that I had never really given a chance and now it's something I listen to on a daily basis. I'm still growing and still learning and I always like experimenting with sounds. So transformation is evident.

In the past, some would have viewed being a woman in the music industry and being a tough and dirty job. With the global outlook changing on this, how do you feel about being a female producer in 2013?

It's hard to make your mark in such a male dominated industry. But there are more women coming forward with great music and gaining popularity like Maya Jane Coles or just recently Krewella. I feel excited about being a female producer because I feel that more and more women will come forward as time goes on. I want to see a female producer make it into the Beatport top 10 and hold their spot! I have hope it'll come within our generation! that would be rad.

What kinds of music can listeners look forward to from you as a producer in 2013?
More House music!

House is the first genre that had me hooked onto electronic music, my first electronic track was a house track. So I'm stepping back from the "Poppy/Electro" sound a bit and going back! You can also thank Isis Graham for re-kindling my love for deep house.

When and why did it become apparent that you wanted to perform as a deejay instead of doing live shows?

I basically became bored with the same set over and over. I love every song I write and produce but playing them over and over gets tiring. With DJing, you can at least play other tracks in your sets. I have also become less interested in singing live. The way I used to play live, I would sing and "DJ" at the same time. It's cool and different but a lot of people don't really know how hard it is to sing, try to sound decent, remember the lyrics, making sure you hit the right button at the right time, counting bars in your head, twisting knobs etc. all at the same time. it's really hard! So I'm cool with playing my recorded tracks instead. it's more fun and not as stressful.

You're quite the technical wizard, what is your current studio set up?

My studio isn't actually so technical. I use Ableton Live Suite 8 for everything. It is my main DAW. I have various VST's and plugins that I use such as Native Instrument's Massive, Arturia Mini-Moog Original/EFX and plugins like Dada Life's 'Sausage Fattener'. I also have some midi controllers/keyboards I use for producing. I have an Akai APC-40 (which I also use live), an acoustic guitar, a few microphones..both dynamic and condenser. I also have an auto-tune vocal pedal which I used to love using live as it gives that "Daft Punk" sound. Other than that, I have a pair of studio monitors and a pair of studio headphones I used when I don't want to be loud. That is pretty much it.

If you could have one piece of gear to complete your collection, what would it be?

There's too many to choose from! but I'd say top three... Native Instrument's Komplete, the new Ableton Live 9 Suite and Sylenth. Any of those would be amazing.

Who are your favorite deejays & producers right now?

All my current favourite DJ's happen to also be my favourite producers so I'm going to 'hit two birds with one stone' here.
DJ's/Producers:
Isis Graham! yep.
Maya Jane Coles
Louis La Roche
Broke One
Russ Chimes

We heard you have an Iron Man costume that you made yourself, are there any chances you will be wearing this onstage anytime soon?

Nina Kraviz

"When it seems like all the world is a friendly space, where you and all of the thousands of people are connected, and instead of being alone, you are just suddenly not. Then the party is over, it's all gone, and then when you go back to the hotel room, the after taste might last a little longer than you probably think, but at some point it's all gone and you understand that the only thing that is left in this world of being a Dj.... is the memory, and that's a bit sad" -
